Thank you to all the Association members that attended the inaugural event last evening in Buffalo, NY. The roast of Alumni Association member and all time great John Tavares was hosted at the Aloft Hotel Downtown Buffalo. Alumni member Joe Rosa served as MC of the night, and entertained the crowd with stories of early playing days of himself and John. Next up and first in the line of roasters was Alumni member Pat McCready, he took his time, and had very funny remarks for all the roasters and even the crowd was not safe.
One memorable story in particular was the "JT give and go" which involved whatever player who had the ball "gives" a pass to John and then "goes" away. Following Pat was Alumni member and current head coach of the Halifax Thunderbirds, Mike Accursi, sharing how John would draw up a play for the man up unit that consisted of four X's and one number 11 in the middle. The play was "pass the ball to 11 and then the four X's get together and celebrate the forth coming goal". Next up were two serious speeches by Alumni members Mike Thompson and Kyle Couling. Both members spoke of memories of playing games with and against JT, and the honor it was to share the floor with him. Closing the roast was Alumni member, Neil Doddridge, who gave a timeline of his years playing with JT dating back to 1985.
John then took the mike and recognized all the roasters, as well as his wife, Katrina, on supporting him through his journey of playing and now coaching. Brad MacArthur, Alumni Association Executive Director, then presented JT with a plaque for the ‘2020 Man of the Year’ as well as two paintings created by Alumni partner Blake Jamieson.
We look forward to more alumni, fan attendance, and engagement moving forward as we plan future events.
